Wildlife Conservation: A Legacy of Success

Teaming with Wildlife Coalition/February 2007

At the beginning of the 20th century, America’s once numerous birds, mammals, and fish were largely depleted. Sportsmen and women, wildlife professionals, political leaders and other conservationists rose to this challenge and worked together to build a new conservation movement.  Game and fish rebounded as hunting and fishing harvests were better regulated, wildlife areas were created, habitats protected and managed, and wildlife populations were restored.

An Unfinished Agenda

The tremendously successful programs of the last century were focused on species that were hunted and fished, or those that were formally identified as "endangered." Unfortunately, the many more species - nearly 85% of all wildlife - that are not considered "game" or "endangered" have lacked adequate conservation attention. Without resources to protect and manage these remaining species, our nation's wildlife agencies have been constrained in their ability to protect them from habitat loss, fragmentation, and a host of other challenges.

Teaming with Wildlife: A National Coalition

The Teaming with Wildlife coalition was born in the early 1990s to address this challenge. Since that time the coalition has led efforts to fund wildlife conservation aimed at preventing wildlife from becoming endangered. Now including more than 5,000 organizations, businesses, and agencies, the coalition is the leading advocate for the State Wildlife Grants program and the implementation of state wildlife action plans.

The Teaming with Wildlife Steering Committee

A national steering committee of thirteen conservation organizations provides national leadership for the Teaming with Wildlife initiative, setting national strategy and supporting the activities of state coalitions.

A coalition of more than 5,700 organizations supporting increased public funding for wildlife conservation and related education and recreation.
