Birmingham Audubon Society

Birmingham Audubon Society is one of the oldest organizations in Alabama advocating conservation and greater knowledge of birds. other wildlife, plants and their habitats. It has been in existence as an unincorporated entity since 1946. On November 22, 1974 it was incorporated as an Alabama non-profit corporation. In November 1976, the Internal Revenue Service granted it an exemption from Federal income Tax, and thus donations to it are deductible by donors as charitable contributions on their income tax returns.

Birmingham Audubon Society (BAS) is an affiliated chapter with National Audubon Society. A person may join as a local member only by paying local BAS dues and will receive BAS’s newsletter, Flicker Flashes. However, if a person is located in BAS’s area or region as recognized by National Audubon and pays the appropriate dues to National Audubon, that person automatically becomes a member of both National and BAS. Additionally, any member of National who lives outside of the BAS area or region may ask National to assign them to the Birmingham Audubon chapter membership. As a member of National and BAS, the member receives Audubon, the magazine published by National and also Flicker Flashes, BAS’s newsletter. Membership in BAS is available to any individual, family, or business entity interested in the purposes and objectives of the Society. It has over 1,000 members.

The MISSION of BAS is to advocate conservation and promote greater knowledge and enjoyment of birds, other wildlife, plants and their habitats through multi-generational educational programs and events.

The VISION of BAS is to be an effective, respected and widely known organization that advocates for a greater appreciation, enjoyment, knowledge and protection of birds, other wildlife, plants and their habitats.
