Mote Marine Laboratory, Center for Shark Research
ABOUT US
Mote Marine Laboratory (MML), located in Sarasota, Florida, is an independent, nonprofit marine research institution with a 47-year legacy of internationally recognized shark research. The Center for Shark Research (CSR), under the direction of Robert E. Hueter, is specifically devoted to the multidisciplinary study and public understanding of sharks and their relatives, the skates and rays. The CSR conducts and coordinates research and provides facilities for studies of the biology of sharks.
The CSR’s research mission includes basic and applied studies of all aspects of shark biology, from anatomy and physiology to ecology and fisheries science, from molecular studies to population-level research. CSR’s scientists investigate the various biological adaptations of sharks to their marine environment, with an emphasis on the role of sharks as an important marine resource. The CSR also serves as a center for the public communication of information concerning sharks and for the national and international exchanges on issues relating to shark biology, including the human utilization of sharks.
