In the late 1970s, a group of researchers converged on a plot of depleted farmland on the Des Plaines River. Armed with a $5,000 grant from the state of Illinois and the strong support of Judith Stockdale (then working for the Openlands project), they formed Wetlands Research, Inc., and set about transforming the wastelands into wetlands.
