State Wildlife Grants Restoring Marine Systems

We don’t often think about how the State and Tribal Wildlife Grants program is helping to restore marine ecosystems. This ScienceDaily Article (dated Feb. 17, 2012), explains how the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is supporting partners who are growing and transplanting staghorn coral to a threatened reef off Florida’s Broward County coast. This is the first time corals grown in an on-land nursery have been transplanted to this part of Florida. With coral reefs worldwide facing degradation due to pollution, overfishing, climate change and development, the transplant of healthy corals back to the reef is an important project for restoring damaged reefs. Funding apportioned to the state of Florida through the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s State and Tribal Wildlife Grants is supporting this important work.
