New Hampshire’s Diverse Lands, Waters, and Wildlife

Timber RattlesnakesNew Hampshire’s diverse landscapes include granite peaks, forests, wetlands, grasslands, coastal islands, and nearly a thousand lakes and ponds. Fish, wildlife and natural lands are important part of New Hampshire’s history and culture and a draw for visitors from around the world.

New Hampshire is also the fastest-growing state in the Northeast, with a human population increase of 17 percent from 1990 to 2004 and land conversion to residential development at twice that rate. Many habitats are rapidly disappearing or are fragmented by roads and dams, and many ecosystems are pushed out of equilibrium by human activities. Fortunately, if we invest in the New Hampshire Wildlife Action Plan today, we can conserve wildlife and vital natural areas for future generations.

A Powerful Coalition to Conserve our Wildlife Heritage

More than 30 organizations and businesses from across New Hampshire have come together to spread the word about the New Hampshire Wildlife Action Plan and to secure the funding it needs for success. YOU CAN HELP by joining the coalition, engaging organizations in your community and urging our elected officials to support the federal State Wildlife Grants Program and legislation providing long-term, dedicated funding for wildlife conservation and related education and recreation. New Hampshire’s Teaming with Wildlife Coalition is also working support state-level funding to help resolve New Hampshire Fish & Game’s ongoing funding crisis.
