Maryland's Diverse Lands, Waters, and Wildlife

Maryland’s diverse landscape is dominated by the Chesapeake Bay, the nation’s largest estuary. With nearly 8,800 miles of rivers and streams and ecoregions ranging from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains, Maryland harbors a broad species and habitat diversity for a state of its size. Unfortunately, habitat loss and fragmentation could further imperil declining wildlife like the brook trout and Delmarva fox squirrel, but if we invest in the Maryland Wildlife Diversity Conservation Plan today, we can conserve wildlife and vital natural areas for future generations!

A Powerful Coalition to Conserve our Wildlife Heritage

Re-launched with a Wildlife Summit on April 19, 2007, the Maryland/DC Teaming with Wildlife Coalition includes more than 110 organizations and businesses working together to spread the word about the Maryland and DC wildlife action plans and to secure the funding  they need for success. YOU CAN HELP by joining the coalition, engaging organizations in your community and urging our elected officials to support the federal State Wildlife Grants Program and legislation providing long-term, dedicated funding for wildlife conservation and related education and recreation.

On May 31, the Maryland/DC Teaming with Wildlife Coalition hosted a field trip for 16 Congressional staffers and two state legislators to wildlife sites on the Delmarva peninsula. The morning began with a canoe trip through the TNC-protected Nassawango Cypress Swamp where staffers had an opportunity to see wildlife like the prothonotary warbler. The afternoon featured a pontoon boat tour to see colonial nesting waterbirds. Many representatives of local conservation and tourism organizations joined us to describe how wildlife-related tourism had revitalized local communities. Click here for more pictures!
