Virginia's Diverse Lands, Waters, and Wildlife
From the Atlantic Ocean on Virginia’s eastern shores to the towering Mount Rogers and the Cumberland Gap at its southwest corner, Virginia includes every wildlife habitat that occurs naturally from Maine to Florida. Peregrine falcons soar from the beaches to the mountains, making their homes occasionally in Virginia’s cities. The rich diversity of native mussels, with interesting names like elephant-ear, rabbitsfoot, and Tennessee heelsplitter, inhabit nearly 40,000 miles of rivers and streams.
Virginia's Wildlife Action Plan united its natural resource agencies and citizens in a common vision for conservation of the Commonwealth's wildlife and habitats in which they live. It identified many conservation challenges ranging from habitat destruction and fragmentation to invasive species and water pollution. Fortunately, if we invest in the Virginia Wildlife Action Plan today, we can conserve wildlife and vital natural areas for future generations.
A Powerful Coalition to Conserve our Wildlife Heritage
D. Dyke, VA DGIF
More than 35 organizations and businesses from across Virginia have come together to spread the word about the Virginia Wildlife Action Plan and to secure the funding it needs for success. YOU CAN HELP by joining the coalition, engaging organizations in your community and urging our elected officials to support the federal State Wildlife Grants Program and legislation providing long-term, dedicated funding for wildlife conservation and related education and recreation. The coalition is also working to secure funding legislation on the state level.
